The stages

Perimenopause, menopause and after.

Menopause isn't a single day. Symptoms often start years before your last period, and some carry on after it. Knowing where you are helps make sense of what you're feeling.

Perimenopause

The transition, often lasting several years, when estrogen and progesterone rise and fall unevenly. Periods become irregular, and symptoms like hot flashes, poor sleep and mood changes often begin here.

Menopause

Confirmed once you've gone 12 months without a period, when the ovaries have largely stopped producing estrogen. It can also follow surgery or some medical treatments.

Postmenopause

The years after. Hot flashes often ease with time, while changes such as vaginal dryness and bone density loss can continue, which is why follow-up matters.

Signs worth raising

Symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.

Every woman's experience is different. Some notice very little, others find it changes sleep, work and relationships. All of it is worth raising, and none of it is something you just have to put up with.

Temperature and sleep

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep that doesn't refresh

Mood and mind

  • Mood changes or anxiety
  • Brain fog and forgetfulness

Body and intimacy

  • Irregular or heavier periods, in perimenopause
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort
  • A lower sex drive
  • Changes in weight, skin and hair

Worth checking first

Thyroid problems, anemia, low mood and some medicines can look like menopause. Your practitioner may suggest a lab panel to rule them out. Heavy or unexpected bleeding should always be checked by your doctor.

Treatment options

Hormone therapy for menopause, explained plainly.

Menopause hormone therapy usually means estrogen, given with progesterone if you still have a uterus. Bioidentical forms are chemically identical to the hormones your body makes. Which route fits, if any, is decided with you.

Estrogen

The hormone most linked to hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. It can be given as a cream, an injection or a pellet, and your practitioner explains how each one differs.

Progesterone

If you still have a uterus, estrogen on its own can thicken the uterine lining, so progesterone is given alongside it to protect it.

Bioidentical hormones (BHRT)

Some bioidentical estradiol and progesterone products are FDA-approved. Custom-compounded preparations aren't, and your practitioner tells you which form you'd get, and where it comes from, before you decide.

If hormones aren't right for you

Some symptoms can be eased without hormones. If hormone therapy isn't suitable, your practitioner talks through the other routes with you.

Safety and follow-up

Who should wait, and how we follow up.

For many women the benefits and risks of hormone therapy depend on age, timing and history. That's a conversation to have in full, not a box to tick.

Who shouldn't take hormone therapy

  • Women who've had breast or uterine cancer
  • Women who've had a blood clot, stroke or heart attack
  • Women with liver disease, or vaginal bleeding that hasn't been explained

Possible side effects

Breast tenderness, bloating, headaches and spotting or bleeding are among the more common, particularly at the start. Your practitioner goes through these, and the less common risks, before you begin.

How follow-up works

Your symptoms and any side effects are reviewed after you start, and your plan is adjusted, then checked at regular intervals while you're on therapy. Keep up your regular screenings with your own doctor.

Private by default

Vaginal dryness, libido and mood aren't easy things to raise. Your consultation is one-to-one with your practitioner, and what you tell us stays in your medical record.

Questions

What women ask us first.

Anything else? Call (239) 360-6253, any day from 8am to 8pm.

What's the difference between perimenopause and menopause?

Perimenopause is the transition, often lasting several years, when hormone levels rise and fall unevenly and periods become irregular. Menopause is confirmed once you've gone 12 months without a period. Symptoms can start well before that point.

What are the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause?

Hot flashes and night sweats are the most familiar. Others include irregular periods, poor sleep, mood changes, brain fog, vaginal dryness or discomfort, a lower sex drive and changes in weight or skin.

What is hormone therapy for menopause?

Menopause hormone therapy usually means estrogen, given with progesterone if you still have a uterus, to ease symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Whether it suits you depends on your age, your history and your symptoms.

Are bioidentical hormones safer for menopause?

Bioidentical means chemically identical to the hormones your body makes. It doesn't mean risk-free, and all hormone therapy has possible side effects. Your practitioner tells you which form you'd get and goes through its risks with you.

Who shouldn't take menopause hormone therapy?

It may not be suitable if you've had breast or uterine cancer, a blood clot, stroke or heart attack, liver disease or vaginal bleeding that hasn't been explained. Your practitioner reviews your full history before deciding with you.

Why do I need progesterone if I take estrogen?

If you still have a uterus, estrogen on its own can thicken the uterine lining. Progesterone is given alongside it to protect the lining. Your practitioner explains what that means for your plan.

Do I need blood tests for menopause treatment?

Your symptoms, age and cycle history matter most in diagnosing menopause, and a lab panel helps rule out other causes, such as thyroid problems, and guides your plan. Your practitioner decides which tests are useful for you.

Are there options if I can't take hormones?

Yes. Some symptoms can be eased without hormones, and your practitioner can talk through those options with you if hormone therapy isn't right for you.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book a consultation directly online or by calling (239) 360-6253. If you have recent lab results, bring them along.

How much does menopause treatment cost in Naples?

It depends on the panel and the plan you and your practitioner agree on. The consultation is free, and you get a price before you commit.
